The Martian (2015) | Movie Review

Starring Matt Damon

Last year, we’ve seen Matt Damon as an astronaut in ‘Interstellar‘. This time, we’ll get to see Matt Damon as an astronaut (again) in the adaptation of the novel The Martian. He plays the role of Mark Watney, an astronaut who gets left behind in the red planet after he was presumed dead.

Let me start off by saying that I loved every minute of this film. For a film that’s about survival, it’s surprisingly optimistic. Given the high chances of immediate death in a foreign planet, the lone astronaut still kept his hopes up. He never gave up and he kept finding ways to survive. There’s a sense of triumph and fulfillment after watching the film. It delivers a mixed bag of emotions, it’s thrilling, it’s hilarious, and it gets emotional too. I haven’t read the book yet, so for the fans of the novel, I can’t really tell you if the movie was faithful to the book.

Matt Damon is just perfect as Mark Watney. Jessica Chastain, Michael Pena, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels and the rest of the cast were all great. This is one of Ridley Scott’s best films, especially after last year’s disappointment that is Exodus: Gods and Kings. The direction, cinematography, acting were all excellent.

The Martian is simply a message to humanity, telling us to never give up and keep surviving. Remember, when you can’t solve a problem, just science the sh*t out of it. It’s a must-watch and it’s definitely one of the best movies this year. Highly recommended 🙂

My Rating: 10/10

PS. I love that they played the song “I Will Survive” while the credits were rolling XD
