Starring Dermot Mulroney, Stefanie Scott
It’s an entertaining and genuinely creepy movie that deserves to be watched on the big screen. Insidious: Chapter 3 serves as a prequel to the first two film of the franchise, and while it is a prequel, you don’t really need to have any knowledge on the previous films, but it certainly helps if you’ve watched the first two films, in terms of storytelling.
The film mostly relies on jump scares, with the booming sound startling everyone in the cinema. If it were executed poorly, these jump scares won’t really scare anyone long-term, but the general creepiness of the film helps make these scenes scarier than they really are. It emphasizes on shadows and small sounds, every bump or knock leading to something frightful. The excellent lighting of the film also gives it an added level of creepiness. Acting was solid, although some characters just feel a bit underdeveloped, but that isn’t really the main focus here.
Overall, I really enjoyed the film, even though some parts were just recycled from other horror movies. I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much if I watched it somewhere other than a cinema, though. This is best-watched in a dark, jam-packed theater, not on your TV or laptop.
My Rating: 7/10
